About
As often in the world of the double bassist, the cultures around the Mediterranean have a prominent place, but the journey also crosses Persia, and more unexpectedly, Ireland, due to its island nature! Blue Maqam features eight sung languages, a little Babel, where the lyrics by Renaud and Solea evoke emotional landscapes in the manner of haikus.
At the heart of the music lies the combination of double bass and voice; that of Solea Garcia-Fons, a first since she is his daughter, but also because singing had long been absent from his musical universe. And here, the vibraphone blades of Stéphan Caracci (also playing the bass marimba during the aerial incursions of the double bassist), along with the percussion of Jean-Luc Di Fraya, create a framework conducive to the soaring of the Garcia-Fons duo.
The double bassist appears as one of the magicians of the current jazz scene, one of its most captivating emissaries. He is among those who have regularly moved the river from its bed, distorted the inherent language of jazz to elevate it with the aromas of distant fragrances. The expressiveness of his playing surprises when one is familiar with the usual register of the instrument, here tuned with a fifth string in the higher register; an unsuspected orchestral world emerges under his agile and mischievous fingers.
The ensemble sounds like an audacious universalist plea, as the clouds threaten on the horizon.
Renaud GARCIA-FONS: 5-String Double Bass
Solea GARCIA-FONS: Vocals
Stephan CARACCI: Vibraphone, Marimba
Jean-Luc DI FRAYA: Percussion, Drums
