About
Everything is double bass in this CD/DVD, and while some pieces are written for solo double bass, the use of loops in others allows for a true multiplication of the instrument.
These loops, made up of a variety of sounds from the double bass alone, produce: percussion, harmonics, voicings, pizzicati... A true evolving orchestration that allows the solo and improvised performance to express itself in all its range and variety (and not through repetitive, monotonous ostinatos).
The inspiration for the themes oscillates between East and West, as well as between ancient and contemporary music: medieval (Marcevol); baroque (Hacía Compostela); oriental (Voyage à Jeyhounabad); African (Kalimbass); Latin (Yupanqui); rock, blues (Rock Wandering); Spanish (Bajo Flamenco)...
In this project, Renaud realizes his lifelong dream: to make the double bass a universal instrument that stands on its own; to give voice to—and make visible—the "thousand and one voices" of this beautiful instrument, exploring all techniques from bow to pizzicato.
Music is a matter of vibrations, and it was the Priory of Marcevol*—due to its location (close to Spain) and its Romanesque origins—that became the ideal place for Renaud to bring this project to life, both for its balanced acoustics—with just the right amount of natural reverberation—and for the spirit it evokes, inspiring both spirituality and celebration, as expressed by his repertoire.
As Renaud says, it is an invitation to the "imaginary journey of a double bass through space and time."
