About

As we had just entered the first lockdown, with an entire season of concerts canceled, Frédéric Leibovitz from Cezame Music Agency made me an exciting proposal: "Why not create a thematic album like Méditerranées from ten years ago, an album focused on the double bass, we could call it Cinematic Bass?"

Of course, we immediately thought of the film scores from the 50s and 60s noir films, where the double bass, with its walking bass lines, plays a prominent role in accompanying suspense, chases, night-time wanderings, and so on, whether in French or American gangster films, B-movies, or in the works of the French New Wave.

Building upon compositions that reference several decades of jazz in film, new ideas slowly emerged, inspired by world music, from the Orient to the West, including Africa.

Thanks to the many facets of the double bass and its various playing techniques—pizzicato, bowing, pizz d'arco, percussion, and various effects—the project expanded, enriched by new colors, creating a vast variety of soundscapes and atmospheres.

Drums, vibraphone, vocals, percussion, and some rare keyboards complete these orchestrations, which are resolutely centered around a multi-faceted double bass, from the deep to the extreme high end—a double bass in all its forms.

You now have in your hands the result of this exploration, under the title Cinematic Double Bass. It consists of 44 pieces spread over two CDs: In a Jazzy Mood and In a Spirit of Travel, two collections of music for films that don't yet exist...

Renaud Garcia-Fons: 5-string double bass, Percussions, Vocals, Keyboards
